Born in Mumbai, India in 1948 Elias lived there until he was sent to school in England at the age of thirteen. In 1966 he entered the Royal College of Music, officially studying composition under Humphrey Searle and Bernard Stevens, whilst also moonlighting with the composer Elisabeth Lutyens. After leaving the RCM, Elias spent a few years in New York where he studied briefly at the Juilliard School, New York.
He has been shortlisted twice for British Composer Awards, first in 2005 for his work Talisman in the Vocal category and subsequently in 2010 his piece Doubles, which won in the Orchestral category.
Electra Mourns is a vocal piece and is scored for Mezzo Soprano, solo Cor Anglais and String Orchestra. It was commissioned by the BBC Proms and had its world premiere at Cadogan Hall, London on the 11 August 2012 as part of the BBC Proms 2012.
